– David Hockney

Tripoli Gallery is pleased to present its 21st Annual Thanksgiving Collective, Making it Home. Featuring Jeremy Dennis, Sally Egbert, Sabra Moon Elliot, Hiroyuki Hamada, Judith Hudson, and Miles Partington, artists that have made the East End of Long Island their home where they currently work and live, we reflect on all the different iterations of home and what it means to make it yours. Opening with a reception for the artist on Saturday, November 29th from 5-7pm, Making it Home gives us all a moment to reflect on what that means.

Making it Home invites the viewer to consider the idea of home in all its forms. There is the home we are born into, the home we shape for ourselves, and the home we imagine for those who come after us. Our first home is the body of a mother. We leave that refuge and enter a world we did not choose. We learn to adapt, to survive, and eventually to create a place that reflects our own needs and ideals.

Alongside these individual stories runs the larger story of human movement across countries and centuries as people leave original homelands in search of safety, freedom, hope, comfort, or power.

As we acknowledge the troubled history of this country and the violence that arrived with Western settlement, we also confront the responsibility to recognize these truths and imagine a future that does not repeat them. Before trying to instruct or correct our neighbors, we must understand the foundations of our own homes.

“Where I held a paintbrush, I was home.”

– Marc Chagall
