A New Work #109

A New Work #109
September 5, 2025 Hiroyuki Hamada

This summer I taught a short workshop on sculpture making.  It was a good opportunity for me to organize my thoughts on what I do in my studio.  To me the making process is a way of accessing the unknown realm of my mind, which includes my unconsciousness as well as anything I can sort of perceive around myself and beyond.  I’ve worked in the studio for over three decades so I have my ways of approaching it and I became aware of some traps to avoid.  But to be honest, things just happen in my studio.  It’s like sowing an unknown seed and watching it grow.  I have no clue how it works.  One day I get struck by what I see and go “oh my god what is this thing”.

It looks like the western empire is falling apart and the dying beast is baring its teeth.  But artists are still making things like weeds breaking out of paved ground.  I don’t know how long I can keep at it, but I am grateful.
